General Tips & Suggestions
Fill boxes to capacity. Boxes that are not full can shift during transportation & sides and corners can collapse if there is nothing to support them.
Keep in mind that anything that is not covered can accumulate dust. Cover furniture with drop clothes or tarps.
Label boxes to stay organized. Be sure to note boxes with fragile contents such as glass.
Think vertical! Make the most of your storage unit by stacking to the ceiling heaviest items first.
Furniture & Appliances
Disassemble beds, tables & larger items to save space. Wrap table legs in bubble wrap or moving blankets.
Apply furniture oil to wooden pieces before storing.
Clean appliances well before hand.
Leave doors slightly open on such appliances like fridges & stoves to prevent mildew.
When stacking furniture use paper pads.
Stand Couches & mattresses on their end to maximize storage unit space.
Clothing, Curtains & Other Fabrics
Purchase wardrobe boxes that allow you to hang your items.
Invest in some non-rusting hangers.
When you are storing wool items make sure you use mothballs or cedar chips to prevent moth damage.
Avoid storing clothing in plastic bags or vaccum-seal bags as airtight seals can cause mildew & mold growth.
Mirrors, Crystal, China & Glassware
Store mirrors on an end, never flat.
For glassware buy boxes specifically designed with dividers.
Wrap each item with paper or foam.
Keep boxes well balanced & light- do not over stuff.
